Character Name: Aoba Seragaki
Canon: DRAMAtical Murder
Canon Point: End of Ren’s Route; Good end – Before he talks with Sei.
Background/History: this should do :D
Personality: When one first looks at Aoba, the impression you get of him isn’t one you get easily. He comes off as that strange guy who works at the junk shop and looks like an 80’s reject with his sense of style.
Yet when you look deep into who he is, there’s quite a lot to him than a lot of people initially think. Firstly, he’s mildly cynical and isn’t one to hold back on his comments towards people, speaking his mind in a straightforward fashion and letting others know what he thinks, though it sometimes seems like it comes off as a little too blunt at times, since Aoba always has a clear opinion on things around him. Despite being cynical and a touch sarcastic from time to time, it doesn’t mean that he’s cruel, as Aoba has to be one of the more emotional, sympathetic people anyone could come to know. Being that he’s usually seen smiling and is often very kind to those around him without expecting anything back, and isn’t the kind of person who wouldn’t judge someone based on their appearance, but rather their personality and how they are as a human being first and foremost.
This doesn’t mean that he is at all a pushover, though, as Aoba is the kind of guy who can hold his own and stand his ground if someone insults him, as seen in the beginning of the game when these two guys from a group called “Bug Bombers” attempted to harass him until his friend Mizuki showed up. As well, he is a bit of a leader type as he shows initiative, asking questions in the group and suggesting ways some things could work in their plans, and it’s seen clearly throughout all the routes. He’s pretty level-headed most of the time until people touch upon some of those points that irk him, and that comes down to also pointing out how he’s morally kind in that he hates seeing people get manipulated or people trying to hurt his family or friends. Same goes with how he dislikes Toue and what he’s intending to do with the place he calls home, worrying about what could happen to the people he cares about. It makes him really angry and he’s nearly acted on impulse to right what he sees wrong, though if he isn’t stopped, it isn’t like he won’t. Having been known to have punched a few people in some of their respective routes (here’s looking at you, Noiz), Aoba is definitely not as weak as some people initially make him out to be.
Aoba is also a habitual over-thinker and has to do so way more than he needs to on the small things until he almost seems to make his head hurt or go to the worst conclusions. On this note it’s worth saying that one of his defining traits is that he’s extremely stubborn, sometimes not even listening to what others tell him to if he believes it doesn’t sound right, or just standing his ground in an argument instead of letting people walk all over him.
He’s the type of guy who, while overly showing so many strong traits, has some smaller, notable ones that make up who he is on top of it all. Like the way he’s fairly childish when he wants to be and teases the people close to him, such as Koujaku in giving him the nickname ‘Hippo’, or even in his route where Aoba is teasing Koujaku about the nosebleed that happened during when they had sex. Aoba really finds small amusements in these small things and keeps these facts close to his heart; even if just to bring back later because he gets a bit of a kick out of it. However, if the teasing is turned on him or the right thing is said, Aoba’s been known to get easily flustered and very awkward at the flip of a switch, sometimes going into that ‘tsundere’ mode and acting as if he isn’t as flustered and embarrassed as he seems and will sometimes even tell the other person he’s with just that.
Over anything else though, he will treasure people that he cares for and tends to mother-hen over them, making sure anything hurt/injured is taken care of. If they hurt emotionally, he’s the type who will put their needs before his so he can help them to the point that he won’t even take no for an answer, doing this so they’re alright and not expecting anything back in return. Aoba also has this awful tendency to be horribly naïve, things sometimes going over his head completely and not getting something right while misunderstanding it until someone says it bluntly to him. Something he usually retorts with a sarcastic comment while trying to cover up that he’d missed something so seemingly obvious.
He’s also someone who doesn’t question much and just accepts it, going with the flow of things, and viewed through the different routes, has been known to change lives with just a smile or happening to say the right things. Though it can go in the opposite direction as well, all thanks to the power he holds which affects the way he can change people’s lives whether it’s for better or worse. He’s got a lot on his plate with this and the mere idea that due to events in his past and a particular accident, he ended up with three personalities that had formed. One is the one Aoba we all know and love, the second is his now-Allmate Ren who had been initially created to become the bond between him and this last personality who came to represent this power that Aoba had once used so freely in his time during Rhyme.
This other side of him is the more dangerous one and throughout routes has been viewed as fairly mentally unstable and seems like all he wants is destruction and death. This side of him when he takes over Aoba has no fear, no hesitation and uses his destructive power as much as he wishes and without fail as he doesn’t care much for other people. An important thing to note is that unlike a lot of normal people, he takes pleasure out of pain and doesn’t even seem to feel it, bursting into laughter when he’s kicked, punched or hit in any form. This’s seen mostly in the end of Koujaku’s bad ending/route where his masochism is very heavy, laughing when Koujaku’s sharp teeth draw blood, where most people would be affected. He’s very sarcastic and cruel and seems to love just telling people what they want to hear, even if it’s just to mess with them, and has been known to mock people right to their face without a shred of fear.
Destruction is what he craves over all else, or it is what it seems. Aoba will be coming from a point before this is revealed canonically, but it is said that the way this other Aoba acts, is out of loneliness and sadness because Aoba’s been suppressing him and ignoring him all this time. Since he’s being taken from before this time, the other side of him would still be present and likely to cause havoc if let loose.
A smaller side note about the regular Aoba himself is with everything else, he's not at all perfect as seen, as he feels guilt over the fact that the first time he'd ever been in someone's consciousness using his power, it had been with Mizuki and that he'd essentially broken him, putting him in a near-comatose state. Though he didn't run from it, choosing to accept it and overcome it instead of running away from it despite it hurts. This shows a lot of his inner strength and an important part of who he is in the end.
Abilities/Powers: Overall, Aoba is almost a regular guy.
Though he is not as muscled and fit-looking as the rest of the guys within the game, Aoba is really quite a skilled fighter from his time back when he still played the game of Rhyme. Told to everyone by Mizuki – one of his friends – when he first shows up that Aoba’s broken some jaws in the past and is able to stand his ground against Noiz in a fight for the most part. He’s been able to land some pretty fierce roundhouse kicks.
Aside from this, what makes Aoba special is that he harbors an ability by the name of ‘Scrap’ which is a power that allows him to control people’s minds with his voice at will, and if he chooses, he can destroy them entirely which will leave the person in a comatose-like state. Where it comes to the people he knows really well, he can initiate Scrap with them through touching them and he enters their consciousness to face them directly. This is a vital thing in the game and it’s what usually decides a good end to a route from a bad one and it varies from character to character.
A lot of them ask questions that require the right answers and are very particular as it treads the line of success or failure. Even one wrong thing done or one wrong action and it’s over. It’s a very touchy ability and on the same note makes it very dangerous, which is where it’s safe to say that while Aoba is controlled by the ‘other’ him, he becomes physically stronger than his normal self.
Items/Weapons: Which three items and/or weapons will your character arrive with?
Since Aoba is not a guy who has weapons (besides his voice), the three things that he’d arrive with, would be:
His Coil [Worn as a watch so it’s automatically with him]
Pink, retro-style headphones
The bag he normally carries his Allmate Ren in. [Ren himself in that cute Allmate-puppy form would be more preferred, if possible. This is only an alternate suggestion if it’s not allowed.]
Sample Entry:
[ It’s not long after the video feed turns on that it’s met with the sight of a LOT of blue.
Mainly coming from the owner’s hair and as the view comes into focus, they’ll get a good look at narrowed, light brown eyes and a rather unimpressed face. ]
…Safe together, huh? Why don’t I believe all of that?
[ It sounded a lot like something Toue would come up with, so he couldn’t be entirely surprised or shocked that things looked like they did now. Either way, it didn’t look like there was a way out, and the thought makes Aoba exhale a soft, mildly frustrated sigh. ]
I don’t exactly know what’s going on… but if someone could fill me on, that would be great.
[ Always. He has to remind himself to not be completely uncivil just because he’s frustrated and nowhere near where he was, worried about Ren and the state of things before he’d woken up in this place that just kept giving him chills down his spine. ]
Sample Entry Two:
The silence in the room was peaceful, the light shining in the room slowly doing it’s job in rousing him as hazy brown eyes slowly opened for a second before falling closed again. Just when had he fallen asleep anyway?
It wasn’t the most comfortable but enough that at first, he hadn’t felt like moving from his spot on the bed until something small in the back of his mind flashed across his closed eyes. It was Toue’s face, wearing that over-confident smile, and then the quiet, disjointed voice of his brother trying to speak to him through Usui. That’s right…. he’d defeated him and even told him where he could go to find Sei… but then… everything had gone black.
Such a thought had Aoba bolting upright on the bed so fast he nearly toppled off of it, eyes wide and confirming that he really wasn’t anywhere near Oval Tower. Toue was nowhere, this room looked nothing like what he’d been in last and it didn’t at all give off the impression of a Rhyme field.
At that point, something else occurred to him and he stiffened, looking around hastily for someone who should be there but wasn’t. It made a tight feeling well up in his chest when he didn’t see him at all there with him. “Ren…” The name whispered past his lips and he tried to ignore how he was already missing the sound of that deep voice speaking to him or the distinct, soft sound of Ren’s paws against the ground. Yet with the realization that Ren wasn’t with him did it bring another one and drove the point home that something more was going on if even his constant companion wasn’t by his side.
Was he even at all in Midorijima anymore?
Brushing a hand through his hair lightly, he frowned a bit and took note of his surroundings, taking in that there were five other beds in here other than his own, and outside of the window it looked just as dreary. Tossing his legs over the side of the bed, he got to his feet and went to take a look at the outside of where he’d ended up and stopped short when the entire view met his gaze, the gaudy billboard standing out and looking entirely too awful – though the people with gasmasks reminded him strangely of Clear – compared to even what he was used to in the Old Resident District.
Then Aoba caught sight of the words on the billboard itself and he couldn’t help but scoff a little. “…Yeah. It really looks like a safe place to be in…” he muttered softly to himself with a sigh, raising his wrist and checking his coil to see if it still functioned, only to find out it worked only just as good as it had in Platinum Jail and no better which irritated him a little. Something then caught his gaze out of the corner of his eye and he glanced over his shoulder at his bed he’d woken up and saw the little, beaten looking cellphone lying there.
Primitive… but maybe he could get ahold of someone with it. It was better than just sitting here, not knowing anything and there was a chance there was other people here who’d know what was going on.
